RE: Can I drink alcohol in my RV if parked????

I would say no problem drinking as for traffic laws however there is probably a policy of these retail locations that state no alcohol consumption on the property.
I would also bet most cities have an ordinance stating the same. Then it would be up to the officer to decide how much of a PITA you are.

RE: Tell me about dogs and California beaches...

I go to Bolsa Chica SB several times a year. It is just north of HB,,
There is a dog beach about 2 miles south I hike down to the pier in HB about 6 miles seems like 20,,, and pass dog beach with the four legged friends running and swimming.
Bolsa Chica should have some drive up spots (power/water) on the beach mid week.

PS I have res for 6 days for 2 spots in a few weeks.

RE: I am happy with my dealer (so far)

Congratulations you made a nice selection. The issues you outline are minor and I would expect you to be treated right.
Drive safe and enjoy..
Paul & Lynne
I just had to add this a good friend bought a HR diesel I think an 01. On his 1st trip the dealer left his tanks full. He had not RVd for many years. He went to dump and had trouble with the electric valves. Long story short he was holding the dump hose nothing was coming out. He ask his wife to help, she started pushing buttons, pulling this and that when all of the sudden she released the black tank.
I had to stop just now because I still start laughing uncontrollably. The black waste hit him full force just above his belt.
He stripped down naked at the Flying J and deposited his cloths in the trash. And I am still laughing even his wife couldn't stop laughing.

RE: Hydraulic Fan on continuously

The hyd fan spins when the engine is started and apparently stays at the same RPM. around 600. If the engine heats up past the set point which I believe is 175 F the fan increases RPM and continues to increase to max as the temp rises. I have never seen the water temp of 180 F. My problem is when I am traveling slowly 5 mph the fan is spinning and because I am going slowly the dust cloud can be annoying to fellow RV'ers. Any one had any experience in changing the fan to come on only when the engine warms up by way of thermostat or other?
Speaking for mine there is a metering control that ties to the computer. Long story short in my case two Freightliner experts (one in Gaffney) working at Freightliner said "the control is a piece of junk" and "Freightliner uses it because its cheap” Mine failed and they told me to disable it and my fan would default spinning to keep me from being towed. I put a new one on myself ($760).
Now I am working normally no fan till I hit the set temp, and then the fan will increase speed to match the temps. I rarely ever see mine spin; also mine does not come on with the AC.
Steve this is just a thought but maybe yours failed and the place you purchased it from disabled it so the fan would spin all the time and they would save a thousand dollars?

RE: How to handle non-RV family that want to borrow your MH?

As far as my 4 children…….. We raised exceptional kids. They made me proud every step of the way. I secured their credit at age 14 they never abused it. They all finished college in the time I paid for. They are in their mid to late 20s, two with families.
Can they use the motor home? Absolutely! The ONLY requirement is them taking the time to learn and understand it. This works for me.

RE: Hydro -hot fluid question.

Thanks. I think I understand: Of course I would need to winterize the water lines and supply when storing the coach in cold weather, but I would not need to do anything to the hydro-hot per se. Right?
You are correct...but remember the domestic water could route many ways especially with the hot water cut off. I will reach in and pull a domestic water line right off the hydro hot just to be sure when I store in the cold.

RE: Hydro -hot fluid question.

Is the liquid in the hydro hot system water, or some type fluid that is freeze resistant??
Liquid? There is the exchange coolant there is the domestic water there is the engine coolant
Three liquids plus fuel
the exchange coolant is antifreeze that will not kill you if it leaks to the potable side, you must use the required fluid
Your question leads me to believe you are asking about your system freezing, if so it is the domestic side that has the potential to freeze and cause thousands of dollars in damage.
You must winterize fully the domestic water in your coach.

RE: Cummins engines ULSD fuel and fuel pumps.

I'm can't see why Cummins would lie about it, if in fact the leaks were due to ULSD. I don't see where they would have any reason not to simply say that was the cause. Why would that be "their standard response"? Do you think there is something they are trying to hide?
I had the issues fixed under warranty so I don’t care what they blamed it on.
However one thought might be …..
If they take the stand that its fuel related they may have to eat the co pay from the customer also if the seals on lift pumps are failing due to the fuel and they admit it they may have to recall all the pumps rather then fixing them as they fail, collecting a small co pay, and moving most of them to the point they are out of warranty.
So telling all service centers never to admit it was fuel related could be a smart business decision by Cummins.

RE: Cummins engines ULSD fuel and fuel pumps.

My 03 ISL has had leaks in
Fuel Pump (injector)
Lift Pump
Fuel Lines
In every case Cummins said after repairs they were not related to the ULSD.
It is probably their standard response.

RE: STUCK IN SAND @ CORPUS CHRISTI, PADRE ISLAND

Wow, I think it is easier to stay off the sand rather than pay or try to get out after getting 42k stuck.
But, John, think of all the fun you will miss by not cleaning and re-doing all the things corrosed by the salt and sand.
Yep and if you just camp and keep the motor home in your drive way at home you will save on fuel too.
Airing down is not a good idea... Maybe on 16 inch rims but if you try it on 22.5s you can damage the tire and then you have the problem of getting back to maybe 120 psi.
Experience is the best option..Know the area and know your capabilities.. For example I camp in Glamis, I drive on very soft sand. I don't stop in the sand till I am at my destination and no sharp turns. I disconnect my trailer brakes before I enter the sand, if I get stuck I don't continue to spin the wheels I drop the rear jacks and slide a 2' x 8' sheet of ¾” plywood under the rear tires and continue on my way. About every 4th trip I will get stuck and its no big deal, only one time did I have to disconnect my 24' cargo box.
Its all part of the adventure…

RE: Alfa Soo Long Quality To Buy or Not

One of the many problems that an Alfa has is fiberglass de-lamination. My understanding is that it can sometimes cost on the high side $25,000 US dollars to fix and that it's problem that quite a few Alfa's end up with. The thing that we noticed when we looked at them is that the A?C system is very in-efficient and really didn't cool to our liking. If you are thinking about touring the Southwest USA in the summer time, you might want to look at something with roof mounted A/C's.
Don’t be scared away from an Alfa. The AC is an issue that can easily is fixed. If you are looking for fast cooling inside and 60 degrees when its 120 outside simply add a roof air DIYS=$800 Shop =$1500.
As for the dreaded blisters, not delimitation in the typical RV sense of the word.
The blisters only affected about 8% of the Class A’s Alfa built. And contrary to misguided beliefs they are caused by a DEFECT in the process of composite manufacture Crane. A company that has a lot to answer for to the RV world.
The blisters are caused by uncured areas of the resin, some coaches have just a few areas and some have many. People were misguided in thinking it was water inside the wall forcing its way out thru the composite causing the blister. If water gets inside the wall it starts to do a number of things, such as breaking down some of the adhesive. However if there is no defect in that part of the wall the moisture will find its way out gravity will take it out the bottom and the wall will never experience blistering.
However sometimes the path of least resistance is the defect in Crane’s wall the water on its way down seeps thru the uncured areas of the fiberglass looking like a soaked wall caused all sorts of problems. Sometimes oozing out brown crap, which makes the RV owner want to find a cliff.
I am not saying its OK to have water inside any RV wall these areas where water may get in should and need to be sealed as soon as possible. The Alfa wall is inches thick with Styrofoam between the panels. Its comical for Crane to contend if water is inside the wall it will force its way thru a solid rather then go the other direction towards the Styrofoam.
Unfortunately the only proper repair is to replace the wall in the area where a blister is discovered so Crane fights this like world war three.
Some facts…. the blisters are also discovered in the absence of water and Alfa is not the only one with the issue. Crane sent out allot of defective material to other manufactures. The only thing the water does is quickly point out the areas Crane screwed up.
So my advise….. look it over with a fine toothcomb any signs of blisters walk away if none negotiate a great deal and enjoy our declining diesel prices.
IMHO

RE: Class A / Alcohol ?? for a CHP officer...

This is how a thread gets off track….simple question
“Is it legal and if so where is it legal to have and an open container in a motor home?”
1. Yes its legal
2. Behind the driver and the passenger seat next to the driver
The driver is responsible and decides if he or she will allow it. The driver is also responsible for any controllable situation whether it’s drinking, the mother in-law nagging, or the kids screaming. You simply pull over. My mother in-law wanted a glass of wine as we were driving up the coast and the sun was setting. I told my wife to give her the whole bottle.

RE: Alpha - winterizing - need info

Hi, we have to winterize a Class A Alpha for some people who can't go south this winter. He was saying the system in this unit does not need antifreeze or air blown through the lines. We kinda disagree with this logic. Can any owners of this line confirm the system in this unit - does it need to be winterized or not? This is a Canadian climate also. The owner also stated a couple of years ago, he phoned the factory - and they said also no need to winterize - just drain the hot water tank and the lines.
Thx in advance for any info!
Alfa has a few different models (Gold, See Ya, Founder) they ALL need to be winterized! Especially the Gold with the Hydro Hot. Unless you plan to have it fully heated thru the winter.
At minimum put antifreeze in the traps and a very good blowing out, however if it has the Hydro hot you better crack the domestic line or make sure you push RV antifreeze thru it or plan to spend $4000 fixing it.
The Alfa is NO different then any other coach take the proper steps to winterize it, also when the factory was still open NO-ONE would tell you not to winterize. It could have been the salesman at the selling dealer.

RE: NEW MEXICO RV REGISTRATION FEES

Oh, imgoin4it and wallynm both got it wrong. You stay in southern New Mexico during the winter, when northern New Mexico will freeze your protrusions off. You stay in northern New Mexico during the summer, when southern New Mexico will cook them off.
As for taxes, I don't have much of a basis for comparison other than to note that our tax burden has gone down since moving here to Angel Fire, New Mexico from Austin and Denton, Texas. Yes, we have an moderate income tax (assessed by the state), but our property taxes (assessed by the county) are a LOT less.
If you do happen to own a lighter-weight travel trailer, the permanent license is nice.
:)
Lynn
Well one of my kids graduated from University of New Mexico and another from New Mexico State. I would favor the south (heck even at a Rotary makeup several months ago Domenici announced he was moving his archives from the North to the South), I have property in Ca and AZ two states that get you coming and going, AZ is almost as bad as Ca now. My daughter took a two-year contract at a hospital in Las Cruces.
I am so tempted to buy a home with her in NM and start reregistering the fleet. As far as a place to retire NM has AZ and CA beat financially hands down. We looked at TX but their property tax is the highest in the country.
All in all NM is a good choice!

RE: 30A connected to 50A

Let me give it a shot…..when I had a Winne it had 30-amp service but the gen provided 50 amps. Basically the other 20 amps on the gen only serviced my 2nd AC. I don’t remember where I got it but I installed a breaker box (box was only about 5” square) by my feet on the firewall. It tapped into the 20amp circuit on the gen; I had a switch on the box and a separate 20-amp cord to plug in at the campgrounds for the 2nd AC. This setup did not trip the ground faults on the campgrounds that had them.
At the time this was very easy for me to install (about three hours)

RE: generic gen

looking for any ideas . I have a gen that starts up and shortly afterwards it shuts it self off. I've checked all the fuses and breakers. also not getting any charge to my batts. or juice inside. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.
You need to post more information
Gas/propane/diesel size detail of problem etc
Generac 7500 has a belt for cooling a belt for electricity if the belt broke it will shut down, there is also an oil level, coolant level sensor, a high temp and oil pressure sensor…… all will shut down the gen to protect it.
First check the belts and all fluids then if not corrected you will need to diagnose the sensors.

RE: Class A / Alcohol ?? for a CHP officer...

Any Chippies out there that can advise me if a passenger of a Class A can consume alcohol as the vehicle is driving down the road? How about a Class C? From reading 23223 VC, it doesn't appear any exceptions are made for motorhomes.
Thanks!!
Driver and passenger seat no drinking
To the rear mix the margaritas in the blender and drink away, but keep your seatbelts on.
